ONLINE: Sashiko Stitching from Stencils with Sandra Johnson

Join us for an online workshop with artist Sandra Johnson. Hand stitching is a wonderful, meditative practice, and Sandra is a master. Her work is amazing and her optimism and spirit are infectious. This workshop is guaranteed to be packed with fun! For those who have taken the previous stencil workshop with Sandra, we will be using a different stencil for this class.

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embellishment using a running stitch of heavy white cotton on indigo fabric. During this live, online workshop you will discover the beauty and artistry of sashiko hand stitching. 

In this class, Sandra will teach you how to work with stencils to add sashiko stitching to your quilts, clothes, bags, or anything made of fabric! We will supply you with a stencil, marking pencil, fabric, thread and needles, so you'll be ready to dive in and start stitching. Students will learn how to mark their fabric and stitching technique as well as learning about some of the different needles, threads, and thimbles that are available. 

Skill level: Beginner and up

Supplies: As part of the class, you will receive a sashiko kit with everything needed to start your sashiko project.

Included in the kit:

• Practice fabric (fat quarter of indigo cotton)
• Sashiko thread*
• Sashiko stencil
• Marking pencil
• One pack of sashiko needles
• Leather thimble "dots"

*The kit comes with traditional white sashiko thread, but you can select to upgrade your kit to also receive our Wonderfil Variegated Perle Cotton sampler pack (limited packs available) or any of our other colored sashiko thread options. You can purchase additional thread HERE. Just select "Curbside Pickup" as your shipping option so you're not charged an additional shipping fee and leave us a note that you're in the workshop. If it's to be shipped, we'll make sure it gets in with your order!

About the instructor: 

Sandra Johnson started sewing in 7th grade and received a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, Textiles, & Clothing from Arizona State University, Tempe. She has been teaching quilting and sewing for 30 years. In 2014, Sandra decided to teach full time and create art and clothing that would appeal to creative people all over the world. Sandra has been featured in several publications, including Simply Moderne (summer 2018 and winter 2019), Altered Couture (2018 - 2019), Haute Handbags (2016-2019), and Apron-ology (2014)

Cancellation Policy:

Class fees are transferable to another class or to studio credit if cancellation is made at least 72 hours before class. If cancellations are made after the 72 hour advance window has passed, we will not be able to issue refunds or studio credits. You can, however transfer the class to a friend. Supply kit fee of $25 and the shipping fee are non-refundable.

If a student arrives 10 minutes or more after the start of class, it is at the discretion of the teacher as to whether the student will be admitted to the Zoom meeting. No refunds or studio credit will be given for late arrivals or no-shows.
