Adult Classes

What should I bring to class?


Under most circumstances, Hello Stitch Studio can provide you with all of the tools and equipment that will be required for any class or camp. We even have sewing machines for you to use! However, if you would like to bring your own tools or machine, you are welcome to do so. We just ask that you make sure your items are adequately marked so they don't end up in our cabinets at the end of the day! As for other class supplies, please check the supply list that we will send after your order has been processed. In some cases, all supplies will be included or available to purchase as a class kit, other times you will need to bring supplies with you to class. We do not have a large retail section of the shop, so please make sure you come prepared!




What if I need to cancel a class?


Hello Stitch will provide each student with any equipment and/or tools needed for each class unless otherwise noted in the class description. By taking a class at Hello Stitch, you acknowledge: Class fees are transferable to another class or to studio credit if cancellation is made at least 72 hours before class. If cancellations are made after the 72 hour advance window has passed, we will not be able to issue studio credit. You can, however transfer the class to a friend. Please plan on arriving at least 15 minutes before the start of class to ensure that all students are given adequate attention and can make the most of every class. Parking in Berkeley can be a challenge, so please leave extra time to find a space if you plan on driving. If a student arrives 15 minutes or more after the start of class, it is at the discretion of the teacher as to whether the student will be admitted. No refunds or studio credit will be given for late arrivals. NO REFUNDS OR STUDIO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR NO-SHOWS. In the event that a class does not have enough students, it may be canceled. Enrolled students will be notified at least 48 hours prior to the start of the class. In the event of a cancellation, students will be refunded within 10 business days. If we reschedule a class to another date, students are also entitled to a full refund. ​




What's my expertise level?


We want you to feel comfortable and confident in class, so we have assigned "expertise" labels to each of our class offerings. Check out the descriptions below and find your best fit! ✂️ - You've seen a sewing machine before, but you've never played with one, or if you have given it a try, you'd really love a little extra help to make sure you're doing it correctly. ✂️✂️ - You have a few projects under your belt. You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics. ✂️✂️✂️ - You've got it down! You've been sewing for awhile and you have a pretty good handle on the basics. You're looking to delve into more advanced techniques and work on advancing your skill set.




What's the food situation?


There is a small refrigerator and microwave available for your use during your time at the studio. Right next door to us is West Coast Pizza and across the street is Long Life Vegi House (Chinese). Trader Joe's is 2 blocks up University Ave. You can see other local restaurant options here.




Can my child take an adult class?


Youth 14 and up may register for adult classes. In order to participate in class, all minors will need a signed parental consent form. If you will not be dropping your student off at the first session of class, please contact us and we will email you a form to fill out and send with your child.




Can my child/spouse/friend accompany me to class?


Sorry! Only registered class participants may be in the studio during class time.





Hello Stitch Kids

What is the kid's camp, class, or afterschool cancellation policy?


Cancellation 14 days or more before the event = 90% refund of the total balance to a studio credit. Cancellation 8-13 days before the event = 50% refund of the total balance to a studio credit. Cancellation less than 8 days before the event = 0% refund of the total balance to a studio credit. NO REFUNDS OR STUDIO CREDITS ARE ISSUED DUE TO CAMPER ABSENCES, INCLUDING ABSENCES DUE TO ILLNESS. To cancel or make other changes to your camp registration, please email Hello Stitch Studio. We understand that sometimes life is unpredictable! If your child cannot attend camp, but has a friend that would like to take their place, contact us to see if they are applicable for a transfer.




What are the age restrictions for kids?


To attend a kid’s class or camp, children must be at least 8 years old at the start of their class or camp session. Youth 14 and up may register for adult classes with the consent of the instructor. In order to participate in class, all minors will need a signed parental consent form. If you will not be dropping your student off at the first session of class, please contact us and we will email you a form to fill out and send with your child. Children above the age of 8 with a valid parental consent form may accompany a studio member while actively involved in a project. The daily drop in fee will apply. Children may not be left unattended unless they are in a class.





General

Studio Use Policy


All users of the Hello Stitch Studio are responsible for their own safety. Hello Stitch will not be held liable or responsible for any injury sustained by using any of the facilities or equipment in the studio. If at any time you notice any equipment and/or tools which are not functioning properly, stop using the equipment and contact a member of the Hello Stitch staff. A studio assistant will be on hand during Open Studio time to provide tool and machine trouble-shooting and support. Studio users should not expect one-on-one attention, as found in our classes. If we feel that you need more help than we can provide, we will help find you a class that will put you on the right path - and if you are a member, you get a discount! Shoes are required at all times as you move about the studio. We understand you may like to sit at the machine with your shoes off, however, we ask that you wear shoes for your safety as you leave your immediate workstation. Please be considerate with your cell phone usage. Calls are allowed within reason but we ask that ringers be turned down or set to vibrate, and that conversations be kept to a bare minimum. How do I cancel my membership?


Your membership starts the day you register and will automatically renew every month on that day. Cancellation must be made before the auto-renewal in order to cancel your automatic payment. To will be able to cancel your membership through our website by going to your Membership area and clicking "Cancel." If you have any difficulty, please call, email, or notify in-store staff the request for cancellation.




What's the parking situation?


We are located just outside of Downtown Berkeley, so the parking here is a little tricky, but not impossible. Some options: Monday - Friday:

  • The neighborhoods around the studio are almost all 2 hour parking spots from 8am - 7pm Monday - Friday, so you can park, set yourself an alarm, and then move your car every couple hours. (It's a good way to make yourself get a little exercise and fresh air!).
  • The streets to the west of Sacramento Ave. and south of University Ave. are always unmetered, neighborhood parking. That's about a 10-15 minute walk away.
  • The meters out front on University Ave. are one hour for $1.50. You can leave your car there and pay every hour.
  • There are garages in Downtown Berkeley. Those are a 10-15 minute walk away.
  • Public transportation is always an option! We are almost exactly halfway between the Downtown Berkeley and North Berkeley BART stations. It's a 10-15 minute walk or 5 minute Uber/Lyft from either station to the studio.
Saturday:
  • For parking on Saturdays, the neighborhood south of University Ave. is free all day.
  • The meters out front on University Ave. are one hour for $1.50. You can leave your car there and pay every hour.
Sunday:
  • Parking is everywhere is free!
To unload your supplies and equipment, there is often parking right out front, at a meter or in the yellow zone. We're happy to help you unload, just come in and ask!




How do I redeem a gift card or class credit?


If you have a Hello Stitch gift certificate or class credit that you would like to redeem, please contact us and let us know:

  • The name and date of the class
  • The 16 digit gift certificate code
If there is a remaining balance due, we will send over an invoice for the additional amount.




Longarm Rental Policy


We are not renting the longarm currently, please subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when rentals resume.




Covid-19 Policies & Precautions


Hand sanitizer and wipes will be available throughout the studio for sewists to use. Please wipe down your machine, work station and tools between use. If you would like to work in the studio without wearing a mask we ask that you upload proof of vaccination through our Health Waiver form before coming in. We will continue to keep class and studio entry at a restricted size through the summer. Without proof of vaccination, you will be required to wear a mask. If you are vaccinated and are more comfortable wearing a mask, go for it! If you're not feeling well, or have Covid symptoms such as a fever, chills, loss of sense of smell or taste, please stay home. If you find that you may have been contagious when at the studio, please let us know so that we can stop the spread!





Shipping & Returns

What's the shipping policy?


All store orders have a flat rate $5 shipping fee. We know that you want your order quickly and will do our best to get it out to you as soon as possible! All orders will be shipped within 4 business days (this does not include weekends or holidays). With the exception of oversized packages, we ship using USPS First Class or Priority mail. We currently do not ship outside of the US. We do not ship sewing machines, those are available for in-store pickup only.




What's the return policy?


If you receive the wrong item, are missing an item, or an item was damaged in shipping, please let us know within 72 hours of receiving your package. Returns and exchanges are accepted up to 15 days from the of original purchase. For any questions about ordering, returns, or exchanges please email orders@hellostitchstudio.com. To ensure full credit for your returns, please contact us first. All returned items must be in original, unflawed and unused condition: unmarked, uncut, and unwashed by the purchaser. No refunds or exchanges on cut fabric. No refunds or exchanges on new Janome sewing machine purchases. Hello Stitch does provide warranty service during the first year of ownership. We do not refund shipping costs. All pricing is valid only on orders placed through the website. Pricing in store may vary.
