Quilting: Beyond the Disappearing 9-Patch

Discover the myriad possibilities when you cut traditional quilt blocks into pieces and rearrange them into intricate new blocks. Amazing variety is possible from this simple technique. These blocks look complicated, but are easy to make once you learn the tricks!

Claire is excited to share with you what she’s learned about these "disappearing blocks." The class will start with a brief introduction about each of the variations. Then each student will chose one or more of these blocks to make in class. This is a process class. However once you make one block, you can make a quilt, placemat, or table runner from these blocks.

This class will cover:

• Using a rotary cutter and ruler
• How to do chain piecing
• Working with color
• Design choices

About the instructor:

Inspired by a neighbor’s Victorian crazy quilt, Claire Sherman started making her first quilt at age 13. There were no quilters in her family, so she taught herself, making it up as she went along. Improvisational quilting is still her favorite method of quilt design. Twenty years after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, with a BFA in ceramics, she rediscovered her love of quilting. Claire has taught workshops in quilting and other crafts for adults and children throughout California.
