Organic Applique with Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession

Explore applique designs that are inspired by the environment that surrounds us, or if you prefer, one that is imagined! Simple shapes and layout make designing your own project a rewarding experience. Students will practice needle turn applique using Wash Away Applique paper and other turning techniques. We will also cover selecting fabric, auditioning for shapes, composition and more.

About the Instructor:

Kathy Doughty is a self-taught quilter, author, fabric designer and the owner of Material Obsession since 2003. Material Obsession is a patchwork shop in Sydney, Australia that is known for innovation in contemporary fabrics and Designs. It is a place where creative people go to stretch comfort zones by thinking outside the square in all areas of quilt design. Kathy attributes her popular teaching methods to always remembering what it was like not to know anything. “I never want to change the comfort zone of a quilter but rather to create paths that expand what is already there.” Encouraging an individual process and telling stories in quilts is critical. Kathy’s workshops focus on taking ownership of the decision making process. Participants learn by discussing what fabric designs have to offer, how to make appealing combinations and how to achieve a unique look that reflects their own personal taste.
