About the Event

Create a unique and handcrafted treasure by exploring the art of bookmaking, but we will be using  fabric! There are endless possibilities for this project. You can create a slow-stitch journal, a children's book filled with texture and color, or even an art book filled with your own compositions. You are only limited by your imagination! Fabric books are travel friendly and allow for hours of entertainment in creating, AND enjoying the finished project!

You are saving by signing up for the The Complete Making of a Fabric Book, a 3 Class Series with Pati Fried!

Fabric Bookmaking

Sunday September 24, 1-4PM

Why should bookmaking only be made of paper? Fabric Books are a perfect way to practice new hand stitches, create stories with whimsical applique, or even use up leftover blocks or fabric ephemera you have been saving. Pati will lead you through the process to create a simple fabric book, with boatloads of options to make your book uniquely yours. We will explore pockets, fold out pages and how to spice up those old blocks that didn’t make it into a quilt.

A fabric book is a wonderfully tactile way to share small textile compositions. A blank book is the perfect size to take with you for those moments when you'd like to do some stitching and applique projects, think textile journaling. You also have the option of creating a book as a gift for a child, or a place to store memories, the world is your oyster - what will you put into your book.

Whimsical Applique

Sunday, October 8, 1-3PM

Let’s blow the lid off of old school applique and open up a whole new world of fabric play. This is a no fuse, no fuss way to layer cheerful colors, shapes and patterns together into whimsical images, then stitch them in place with fun, imperfect stitches. With a few important design concepts, you will see how easy it is to design and create oodles of projects with this technique .

We will work with fabric bits and scraps, recycled materials and ephemera to create playful vignettes that can be added to your fabric book or to create a small, stand alone work of art. You'll learn some basic decorative stitches and other techniques to secure your composition to its fabric background and add an additional layer of fun to your piece.

Slow Stitching

Sunday, October 22, 1-3PM

Connect your hand with your creative spirit. Explore different methods of stitching, using a plethora of colorful, thin and thick threads onto a lovely swatch of fabric.  You will learn to stitch, fray, weave, and knot, allowing your hands to connect with the moment. The stitches covered in class can be used for embroidery, hand quilting and to stitch down applique, as in our Whimsical Applique class offered.

Slow Stitching shares a connection with the traditions found in the making and mending of Japanese Boro and the quilting seen in Indian Kantha. It can lead to beautiful artwork while allowing you to let go of the stress and anxiety of our world. Be mindful and enjoy the creative energy that comes from busy (busy slow) hands.
