Starting with Silk

ONLINE: Starting with Silk

Many of us have silk treasures from trips abroad, neckties or prom dresses that are too special to cut up so we leave them tucked away in a drawer or box. It’s time to get them out and make something beautiful with artist Julia McLeod.

Starting with Silk

About the Event

Many of us have silk treasures from trips abroad, neckties or prom dresses that are too special to cut up so we leave them tucked away in a drawer or box. It’s time to get them out and sew them into a beautiful piece of art!

This workshop has three elements:

  1. You’ll begin by determining the fiber content of your fabrics by using the burn test.
  2. We will then cover two very different ways to work with silk: First, a very free, improvisational piecing technique I call ‘Pieces, Pairs and Panels’ and  second, a foundation piecing method that gives stability and ultra-precise results, even with the lightest weight silks.
  3. Working with your stash, you’ll construct elements in these two techniques that can be combined into a small, pillow-sized finished piece.

Your class kit will include:

  • A variety of silk fabric scraps to play with
  • Muslin foundation fabric
  • Fusible interfacing

This workshop will be recorded and will be made available to class participants for 2 weeks following the lesson.

Skill level: ✂️✂️

You have a few projects under your belt. You already know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics. This class is for the patient, confident quilter. The block is not technically difficult but does take a little time and attention to detail.

Supplies: We will ship the class kit to you anywhere in the US.* You can also pick up your kit from Hello Stitch during our curbside pickup hours (Tues & Thurs, 11am - 3pm). Kits are usually shipped (or available for curbside pickup) one to two weeks before class. We'll send you a notice as soon as they are shipped or ready for pickup!

*Sorry - US shipping only.

In order to receive your kit in time for class, please register before September 6th for shipping and curbside pickup. Curbside pickup is available at Hello Stitch on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11am - 3pm. We will send a notice when kits become available.

About the instructor:

Julia McLeod has been sewing and quilting for decades but three years ago narrowed her focus to making quilts from silks and rescued materials.  Neckties, clothing and furnishing samples have all found their way into her work. Julia lectures and teaches about ways quilters can incorporate silk into their quilts.

Cancellation Policy:

Class fees are transferable to another class or to studio credit if cancellation is made at least 72 hours before class. If cancellations are made after the 72 hour advance window has passed, we will not be able to issue refunds or studio credits. You can, however transfer the class to a friend. Supply kit fee of $20 and the shipping fee are non-refundable.
