Sunburst Quilt with Sujata Shah
About the Event
Inspired by American Folk Art quilts, artist Sujata Shah has put her own improvisational spin on the traditional Pinwheel quilt block to create her unique "Sunburst" block. Learn how to make this beautiful quilt without using any templates or applique.
This class is designed to focus on cutting multiple curves through layers of fabrics and then sewing the pieces. Sujata will share many tips on making your one of a kind blocks and offer suggestions for color combinations and layouts. You'll be amazed at how easy, fun, and fast it is to make this tricky looking block!
Skill Level: ✂️✂️You have a few projects under your belt. You already know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics.
This workshop will include a short break for lunch.
About the Instructor:
Sujata Shah, a graphic designer and textile artist, is originally from Mumbai, India. She found an instant connection between the abstract utilitarian quilts of Gee's Bend and Godharis from India. Her instinctive ability to work with colors and textures combined with education in graphic design has helped her develop a unique style as a designer. Sujata draws her inspirations from imperfections and irregularities of free-spirited folk art and crafts from around the world. In her book, Cultural Fusion Quilts - A Melting Pot of Piecing Traditions, she introduced free-form blocks and abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks that reflect her theory that each handmade craft has a stamp of the maker. On her blog, The Root Connection, she started the inspiring hashtag, #UANDUQAL, which encourages makers to create their own quilts based on the works featured in Roderick Kiracofe's book, Unconventional and Unexpected.
