Make a Mystery Quilt

About the Event

This is a 7-session online workshop. Class wil be held from 7pm - 8pm:

October 21, 28

November  4, 11, 18, 25

December 2

Tune in Wednesday evenings to join instructor Nancy Williams (you can call her Detective Inspector Williams if you like!) to get your weekly clue and technique tutorial. By the end of the class, you'll have a finished quilt top. What will it look like in the end? You won't know until you're finished!

What is a mystery quilt? It's a bit like a Quilt Along, where you will get instruction each week and you will be making the same blocks as the other people in class, except you won't know what your finished quilt will look like until the end "reveal." Not knowing what your final product will look like is a fun, more relaxed way to approach quilting because you get to focus on the process and not worry so much about the outcome.

Skill level: ✂️✂️

You have a few projects under your belt. You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics.

Supply List:

You will need quilting tools, such as a rotary cutter, self healing mat, rotary ruler, and pins as well as access to a sewing machine and iron. You will also need the following fabrics*:

Focal or Feature Fabric - 1 yard

In this quilt, there are 12 focal blocks finished at 6”x12” and 6 finished at 6”x6”.

You have the option of using:

  • 1 Focal Fabric which would require 1 yard or
  • Up to 18 focal fabrics which would require yardage based upon the block size(s) above or
  • Any number in between also requiring yardage based upon the block size(s)

All other fabric (Coordinates A and B) should work around this/these Focal Fabric(s).

This fabric can be anything you choose (large print, small print, solid, etc).

Coordinate A - 1 yard

Coordinate B - 1 yard

These fabrics should blend closely with the focal fabric. The tone should be similar to the focal fabric.

Other fabric requirements

Border (Optional): 1⁄2 yard

Backing: 3-2⁄3 yards

Binding: 1⁄2 yard

*Don't agonize over your fabric choices. Let yourself have fun with your choices!

About the instructor:

Nancy Williams has been sewing for longer than she cares to say - clothing for the kids and grands; a few wedding dresses; some tailoring.  She began piecing quilts about 30 years ago and mostly quilting them on her domestic machine.  After renting time on long arm quilting machines and liking it (a lot), she decided to purchase her own. Since then, she has been honing her art and skills on personal quilts, donation quilts and quilts of those she is honored to be trusted with.
