Make a Mystery Quilt

About the Event

**This is a 4-session online workshop. Class wil be held every Wednesday in May at 7pm. The introductory session will be one hour and the remaining sessions will be about 30 minutes each.**

Every Wednesday evening in May, join instructor Nancy Williams (you can call her Detective Inspector Williams if you like!) to get your weekly clue and technique tutorial. By the end of the month, you'll have a finished quilt top. What will it look like in the end? You won't know until you're finished!

What is a mystery quilt? It's a bit like a Quilt Along, where you will get instruction each week, and you will be making the same blocks as the other people in class, except you won't know what your finished quilt will look like until the end "reveal." Not knowing what your final product will look like is a fun, more relaxed way to approach quilting because you get to focus on the process and not worry so much about the outcome.

This workshop is free for Hello Stitch Members. We appreciate you!! Not a member? Not a problem! We'd love for you to join us for class, but there is a $40 registration fee. Interested in becoming a member? Find out more HERE.

Skill level: ✂️✂️

You have a few projects under your belt. You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics.

Supply List:

You will need quilting tools, such as a rotary cutter, self healing mat, rotary ruler, and pins as well as access to a sewing machine and iron. You will also need the following fabrics:

  • Focal or Feature Fabric - ¾ yard. All other fabric should work around this central fabric.  This fabric can be a fairly large print - one that would show up in 8” squares.  This should not be directional.
  • Background - 1 ½ yards. Obviously, this will be quite a bit of the quilt.  This can be a solid (tone on tone) or an interesting print that works with and plays a supporting role to your focal fabric.
  • Coordinate A - ½ yard
  • Coordinate B - ½ yard. These fabrics should blend closely with the focal fabric.  The tone should be similar to the focal fabric.

Help with fabric choices will be covered in the first session of the class. The finished quilt size will be app. 48” by 56” but can be made larger with borders.

About the instructor:

Nancy Williams has been sewing for longer than she cares to say - clothing for the kids and grands; a few wedding dresses; some tailoring.  She began piecing quilts about 30 years ago and mostly quilting them on her domestic machine.  After renting time on long arm quilting machines and liking it (a lot), she decided to purchase her own. Since then, she has been honing her art and skills on personal quilts, donation quilts and quilts of those she is honored to be trusted with.
