About the Event

Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8pm PST (4 Meetups)

July 9, 16, 23, and 30

We've had a lot of requests so we're happy to announce the NEW Make a Fitted Dress class with Beth Galvin!!

In this class, garment maker extraodinaire, Beth Galvin, will teach you all the techniques you need to be able to make a sophisticated fitted dress. Rather than focus on only one dress pattern, she will share the tips and tricks needed to make just about any dress pattern that has princess seams. Princess seams are a great way to provide shape to a dress or shirt without using darts.

Beth is including a lot of techniques, tricks and tips in this class that extend beyond just dress making. She will cover how to:

  • choosing pattern size
  • some common fit adjustments for sewing the princess seam bodice
  • making a test version
  • interfacing dresses
  • sewing princess seams
  • changing sewing order to make sewing and fitting easier
  • adding a lining to any pattern
  • adding facings in place of a lining
  • pattern design changes, converting from buttons to zipper, or adding button opening
  • buttonhole tips for dresses

This is not a fitting class but Beth will discuss choosing your size and a few other fit tips.

There are lots of great patterns out there. Don't worry, Beth will cover pattern and fabric selection in the first class to help you choose your favorite. Because this class focuses on techniques rather than being a sew-along following a specific pattern, you will learn the skills regardless of what pattern you select!

A couple options to consider (you are welcome to choose any dress pattern with princess seams):

Each week Beth will walk you through new topics and skills needed to make a fitted dress, sharing her expertise and answering all of your questions. One of the great things about this online class is that you can choose whether you want to sew along that week's techniques, or if you just want to watch class and sew when it's convenient for you. You have video available to refresh your memory when you want to tackle that part of the project.

Skill level: ✂️✂️

You have a few projects under your belt. You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine and you're ready to learn more advanced basics.

So that you can be sure to get your pattern in time, we recommend purchasing your pattern digitally. If you've never done a PDF pattern before, we have a great tutorial on our blog
