Learn to make a your own jeans! Skinny jeans, mom jeans, high waisted jeans, hip huggers, wide leg jeans - whatever your jam, they all take the same techniques. In this class, garment maker extraordinaire, Beth Galvin, will teach you everything you need to know to be able to make jeans. Rather than focus on only one pattern, she will share the tips and tricks needed to make just about any jeans pattern. 

There are lots of great patterns out there for both women and men. Don't worry, Beth will make some pattern recommendations and cover pattern and fabric selection in the ONLINE prep session to help you choose your favorite. Because this class focuses on techniques rather than being a sew-along following a specific pattern, you will learn all the skills regardless of what pattern you select!

We've added an online prep session to help you prepare for the In Person workshop. The following topics that are covered in the prep session:

  • Pattern selection
  • Fabric selection
  • Fabric preparation
  • How to choose the correct size
  • Cut and mark your fabric

In Person Sewing Workshop

The In Person classes will be held at Bay Quilt on Sunday, June 16 and 23 from 10AM - 3PM (2 days). Beth will guide you through all the skills needed to make amazing jeans, sharing her expertise and answering all of your questions. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Baste to check fit
  • Sew front and patch pockets
  • Sew a fly front
  • Install a zipper
  • Topstitching tips
  • Proper seam finishes for jeans
  • Apply the waistband and belt loops

There is a lot of sewing involved in making a pair of jeans. We scheduled the in person class sessions a week apart, and Beth will give you recommended homework, you should plan to sew at home between classes if you want to finish your jeans.

Technique Videos:

At checkout, you will have the option to add Beth's series of technique videos.  Because jeans have so many tricky techniques, we highly recommend the videos for this workshop. Along with always having to the video to refresh your memory when you want to make another pair of jeans, they provide excellent support for any sewing you do between classes. We'll send you the link to the videos at least a week prior to your first in person sewing class.  

Skill level: ✂️✂️✂️

You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine. You have made a few garments and you're ready to learn more advanced basics.

Supplies:

Bring your pattern and the fabric and notions required for the jeans pattern and style you select.

Sewing Machines and Equipment:

You will need to bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies to class. The specific tools you need will be included in the supply list.

About the instructor: 

Beth Galvin started sewing at age 7 and can sew everything from casual knit tops to tailored jackets to over the top party dresses. She has a popular sewing blog, Sunnygal Studio where she shares her tips and tricks and she also blogs for Craftsy. Beth loves to help people get the pattern they love to fit the way they want. She is brilliant at adding stylish little details that make your projects look professional and special, but what's even better is that she has figured out how to make it easier! One of her favorite things is to teach you the tips and shortcuts that will make your sewing faster and also more fun. Sign up for one of Beth's classes and let her teach you how satisfying it can be to sew great clothes that make you look great!

Location:

This class is being held at the Bay Quilts located at 5327 Jacuzzi St. 3-C, Richmond, CA 94804. Bay Quilts is run by Sally Davey and her daughter, Abbey-Shane  a team of lifelong artists and crafters who have been in the quilting industry for over 30 years. They opened Bay Quilts to share their passion and knowledge with the vision of creating a community where artists, crafters, quilters, and makers of all ability can learn, grow, and create together.  This unique fabric shop is so much more than a store - from consignments quilts and gifts, and cloth figures to monthly gallery exhibitions and artist receptions to workshops.  Bay Quilts is a sanctuary for creatives of all skill level. Bay Quilts is generously offering a 10% discount to students on the day of the class.

The classroom space is on the 2nd level so you will need to be able to climb a flight of stairs. There is a convenient caddy so you don't have to carry your equipment up the stairs.

Class fees are non-refundable. However you may transfer the class to a friend if you let us know in advance.
