Make Fabric Cards - An Introduction to Paper Piecing

Handmade cards are the perfect way to personalize your holiday greetings!

Has paper piecing seemed too complicated or too much work? This class will teach you how to paper piece in a way that is easy, quick, precise, and fun as you make fabric greeting cards. It is a great technique for using scraps and small pieces of fabric that you have been saving.

  • This paper piecing technique is simple. You will not have to tear off the paper when you are done sewing.
  • The instructor will supply the cards (photo frame cards sold by Strathmore), envelopes and several paper piecing patterns.
  • You will choose which patterns you want to make at the beginning of the class and then learn the paper pieced technique as you make your cards.
  • At the end of the class you will have 2-3 cards completed and you will have learned how to construct any quilt block pattern that uses paper piecing.
  • The patterns you will be given in class can be enlarged and used in different combinations to make a table runner, or wall hanging in future projects.

Paper piecing can be done using a few different techniques. At the beginning of the class, the instructor will review foundation piecing, paper piecing (a type of foundation piecing) and discuss the techniques, advantages, and disadvantages of different foundation papers that you can use in future projects.

Then we will spend most of the class practicing by making fabric pictures that fit into a 3 ¼-inch by 4 1/5-inch rectangle. The fabric picture will be inserted into the photo frame card.

The instructor will provide you with:

  • A variety of patterns (e.g., Christmas tree, Dreidel, Valentine heart, and a few spring flowers)
  • 2 pieces of vellum paper to trace the patterns
  • 5 photo frame cards and envelopes
  • Note: Additional patterns, newsprint, freezer paper, and a light box will be available so you can copy a few additional patterns to try at home using different foundations.

Skill level: ✂️✂️

You aready know how to thread and use a sewing machine and how to sew a ¼ seam.

Supplies: You will receive a supply list when you sign up.

Sewing Machines: If you would like to use one of the sewing machines at Ace Makerspace please select the Use Ace Machine ticket. If you would like to use your own sewing machine please select the Use My Machine ticket. DO NOT purchase a Use My Machine ticket if you don't have a machine, it isn't working properly or you aren't comfortable operating it. We don't have extra machines you can use. If we have sold out of Use My Machine tickets, and you want to use your own machine, you may purchase a Use Ace Machine ticket.

About the instructor:

Tekoa King is a nurse-midwife who has been quilting since her grandmother taught her to sew. During her career at UCSF, she taught medical students and nursing students obstetrics. For years, she pieced quilts for family members and her grandmother and aunt hand-quilted them. During those years, she took many quilting classes and moved through classic piecing patterns using templates to paper-piecing and on to designing her own patterns. Now retired, she continues to learn new quilting techniques and looks forward to sharing what she has learned through teaching.
