We've combined our favorite two beginner classes into one great experience!

Love Your Sewing Machine

This is your chance to really get to know your sewing machine. This is the perfect class for you if you have a new sewing machine and never learned how to use it, or if you have a sewing machine that you use to know how to use but need a refresher, or if you'd just like to build your confidence.

Using a sewing machine can be wonderful, gratifying experience, or it can make you want to tear your hair out and throw your machine off the top of a very tall building. If your experience is in the latter category or you're scared to find out, this is the class for you!

We will cover some simple tips and tricks that will help change your relationship with your sewing machine. We will cover things like threading your machine, winding a bobbin, correct needle selection, tension issues, and basic machine maintenance.

Make Napkins

And, since they say practice makes perfect, we will teach you everything you need to know to make some beautiful napkins. We want to make sure that you go home you've actually used your machine and will feel confident to sit down and make something next time you pull it out.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to use and maintain your sewing machine
  • How to use a rotary cutter and ruler
  • How to lay out and cut fabric
  • How to sew a straight seam and manage seam allowance
  • How to make cloth napkins

Supply List:

You will receive a supply list when you sign up.

Sewing Machines and Equipment:

You will get the most out of this class if you bring your own sewing machine. However, Ace Makerspace has a fully equipped sewing studio and students can use the Ace sewing machines on a first come, first served basis (there aren't enough for everyone). The specific tools you need will be included in the supply list.

Skill level: ✂️

You've seen a sewing machine but you've never played with one, or if you have given it a try, you'd really love a little extra help to make sure you're doing it correctly.

About the instructor:

Stacey Sharman grew up in rural Virginia where a favorite family outing was going to antique malls, auctions, and yard sales. She was always intrigued by the history and the mystery of discarded, lost, or abandoned objects. Channeling that into her work, she found great satisfaction in creating something lovely and new from what others may see as useless. The art of creating patchwork mimics the art of life: creating the most beautiful thing you can with what you have at hand.

Location:

This class is being held at the Bay Quilts located at 5327 Jacuzzi St. 3-C, Richmond, CA 94804. Bay Quilts is run by Sally Davey and her daughter, Abbey-Shane  a team of lifelong artists and crafters who have been in the quilting industry for over 30 years. They opened Bay Quilts to share their passion and knowledge with the vision of creating a community where artists, crafters, quilters, and makers of all ability can learn, grow, and create together.  This unique fabric shop is so much more than a store - from consignments quilts and gifts, and cloth figures to monthly gallery exhibitions and artist receptions to workshops.  Bay Quilts is a sanctuary for creatives of all skill level. Bay Quilts is generously offering a 10% discount to students on the day of the class.

The classroom space is on the 2nd level so you will need to be able to climb a flight of stairs. There is a convenient caddy so you don't have to carry your equipment up the stairs.

Cancellation Policy:

Class fees are non-refundable. However you may transfer the class to a friend if you let us know in advance (please ask them to set up a guest account at Ace Makerspace).
