About the Event
IN PERSON: Class, Sunday, July 21, 10AM - 1PM PST
Bay Quilts
Looking for a calming, meditative summer project or to expand your handwork repertoire? Sashiko is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditional sashiko was used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches. Today, in addition to visible mending, sashiko is often used for purely decorative purposes or for quilting.
In this class you will learn the basics of sashiko including:
- transfering the stitch patterns to your fabric
- stitching three different popular japanese motifs
- and exploring ways to use your sashiko stitching
In class, you'll learn and practice three different sashiko patterns so when you leave you'll have the techniques and skills to incorporate sashiko into your mending, decorative stitching or quilting. Kristen will share projects she's done using sashiko to spark your creativity.
Skill level: ✂️
No previous sewing experience is needed - this class is all handwork, you will not use a sewing machine.
Supplies: You will get a kit of sashiko supplies as part of the class. You should bring snips/scissors, a straightedge and a thimble (if you have one you like using).
