About the Event
Master the art of mixing fabrics with Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession! Kathy is known for her eclectic fabric pairings and signature style, and will help to empower you to develop your own voice as a quilter.
Color Works is a vibrant quilt that uses large scale, multi-colored prints. Working with a variety of scales and color tones, you will learn how to work with large scale prints. The feature prints are shown off as hero fabrics by using low key tonal prints for the background and stripes for the sashing.
Some ideas for focus fabrics: Use large scale prints by popular contemporary designers like: Alexander Henry, Kaffe Fasset, Jennifer Paganelli, Anna Maria Horner. Or if you like, you can gather large scale Japanese, reproduction or even novelty prints as long as they are attention grabbing, big-scale prints!
Backgrounds: Consider low key fabrics that are either hand dyed, batik or small
prints. The background fabrics in that Kathy used in her sample quilt are are by Marcia Derse. The stripes are Kaffe Fassett shot cotton.
Skill level: Confident Beginner(102+) - Advanced
About the Instructor:
Kathy Doughty is a self-taught quilter, author, fabric designer and the owner of Material Obsession since 2003. Material Obsession is a patchwork shop in Sydney, Australia that is known for innovation in contemporary fabrics and Designs. It is a place where creative people go to stretch comfort zones by thinking outside the square in all areas of quilt design. Kathy attributes her popular teaching methods to always remembering what it was like not to know anything. “I never want to change the comfort zone of a quilter but rather to create paths that expand what is already there.” Encouraging an individual process and telling stories in quilts is critical. Kathy’s workshops focus on taking ownership of the decision making process. Participants learn by discussing what fabric designs have to offer, how to make appealing combinations and how to achieve a unique look that reflects their own personal taste.
