About the Event
Cathedral window is a beautifully intricate quilt block pattern. Traditionally it is done entirely by hand, however, Claire will demonstrate three ways to make these blocks: completely hand sewn, completely machine sewn, as well as well as a combination of both. The background fabric is folded in origami fashion and the contrasting center fabrics are sewn into each pocket like a small jewel. This is a dimensional, multi-layer quilt block that doesn’t require quilting and is perfect for using scraps of fabric.
This is a process class. Once you learn how to make the blocks you can turn them into a quilt, wall hanging or pillow, but those projects won’t be covered in class. These blocks look complicated, but once Claire teaches you the process, it isn’t that hard to do.
Skill Level: Beginner (102)
About the instructor:
Inspired by a neighbor’s Victorian crazy quilt, Claire Sherman started making her first quilt at age 13. There were no quilters in her family, so she taught herself, making it up as she went along. Improvisational quilting is still her favorite method of quilt design. Twenty years after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, with a BFA in ceramics, she rediscovered her love of quilting. Claire has taught workshops in quilting and other crafts for adults and children throughout California.
