Learn a fun and versatile way of making improvisational star blocks to make a Very Variable Star Quilt with Claire Sherman. We will have fun playing with fabrics and simple shapes to create an eight pointed star. Students will explore easy improvisational cutting and piecing techniques to create their own unique quilt top using the “sew and flip” method of improvisational piecing. If you don’t know what “sew and flip” means, then this is the perfect class for you, because once you learn it, you’ll use it again and again. The class is beginner friendly and is appropriate for students who have taken Claire's Wonky Star class as well as for students who have no idea what a wonky star is, or how to make one.
This class will cover:
Using a rotary cutter and ruler
Improvisational piecing and cutting techniques
How to do chain piecing
Working with color
Use of a design wall to audition quilt layout ideas
About the instructor: Inspired by a neighbor’s Victorian crazy quilt, Claire Sherman started making her first quilt at age 13. There were no quilters in her family, so she taught herself, making it up as she went along. Improvisational quilting is still her favorite method of quilt design. Twenty years after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, with a BFA in ceramics, she rediscovered her love of quilting. Claire has taught workshops in quilting, ceramics, and Jewish ritual objects for adults and children throughout California.

Under most circumstances, Hello Stitch Studio can provide you with all of the tools and equipment that will be required for any class or camp, that includes your sewing machine! However, if you would like to bring your own tools or machine, you are welcome to do so. We just ask that you make sure your items are adequately marked so they don't end up in our cabinets at the end of the day!
As for other class supplies, please check the supply list that we will send after your order has been processed. In some cases, all supplies will be included or available to purchase as a class kit, other times you will need to bring supplies with you to class. We do not have a large retail section of the shop, so please make sure you come prepared!
