About the Event

IN PERSON: Class, Sunday, August 13th, 10AM - 3PM PST

In the well appointed textile studio at Ace Makerspace, Oakland

All materials are provided for this class!!!

Who doesn't like options? For this class, you get to choose what you want to make:

String Backpack

This cute and useful string backpack is a beginner friendly project that is so much fun to make! It's great for a trip about town or taking things to school. This backpack is a one size fits all, you can make one for yourself, a friend or your favorite little ones.

Quilted Journal Cover

Use your beautiful quilted cover to make a bedside dream journal, a customized gift for a friend, or to spruce up your boring school composition book. This class is perfect for both confident beginners & folks with some sewing or quilting under their belts.

Whichever project you choose, everything you need is included in the class.

Since it's back-to-school, we thought it would be fun to have a class where adults can bring a child if they want to learn to sew together! If you are bringing a child: you both need to sign up for the class, kids need to be at least 10 years old and mature enough to work safely with sewing machines and sharp equipment, and you're responsible for their safety.

This is a great beginner class, you don't have to bring a child if you just want to sew by yourself.

Nancy will walk you through everything you need to sew a string backpack including:

  • threading and operating a sewing machine
  • sewing fabric together
  • if you choose the backpack, you will make a pocket, lining and learn to insert a string
  • if you choose the journal cover, you'll use a walking foot to quilt multiple layers together

Skill level: ✂️

You have seen a sewing machine and are interested in learning how to operate it. This class is geared for adventurous beginning sewers who want a straightforward project.

Supplies: We will provide everything you need to make either a cute string backpack or a quilted journal cover.

Sewing Machines: If you would like to use one of the sewing machines at Ace Makerspace (we highly recommend this for beginning sewists) please select the Use Ace Machine ticket. If you are comfortable and would like to use your own sewing machine please select the Use My Machine ticket. DO NOT purchase a Use My Machine ticket if you don't have a machine, it isn't working properly or you aren't comfortable operating it. We don't have extra machines you can use. If we have sold out of Use My Machine tickets, and you want to use your own machine, you may purchase a Use Ace Machine ticket.

About the instructor:

Nancy Williams has been sewing for longer than she cares to say - clothing for the kids and grands; a few wedding dresses; some tailoring.  She began piecing quilts about 30 years ago and mostly quilting them on her domestic machine.  After renting time on long arm quilting machines and liking it (a lot), she decided to purchase her own. Since then, she has been honing her art and skills on personal quilts, donation quilts and quilts of those she is honored to be trusted with.

Special Opportunity:

Ace Makerspace is holding a Textiles Open Studio immediately following this class. You have a chance to use their beautiful space, sewing machines and equipment to continue working on your garment. The Textiles Open Studio is hosted by Team Ace who can assist you with the equipment and answer your basic sewing questions. [Please note: this is not a Hello Stitch Studio event and, while the Ace Team is very knowledgeable, they do not have experience making this specific project.] You can learn more and RSVP for the Textiles Open Studio hosted by Team Ace here.
